Military officials are investigating what appeared to be a flammable liquid found on a fatally burned woman and her critically burned Marine husband after a weekend fire at their home.

Andrea M. Patrick, 21, of San Diego died early Sunday. Her husband, Cpl. Keith B. Patrick, 24, was in critical condition Monday at Humana Burn Center in Augusta, a hospital spokeswoman said. His hometown was not immediately available.

Both were burned over 90% of their bodies in the fire shortly after midnight Saturday at the Marine Corps Logistics Base, officials said.

A military police officer passing their base home saw the Patricks run outside covered with flames, said base spokeswoman Regina Hegwood.

Neighbors doused the couple’s burning clothes with a garden hose while others rescued their infant daughter from the burning home, she said.

Investigators found what was suspected to be flammable liquid, possibly gasoline, on the Patricks’ clothes and a bottle of the liquid in the kitchen, said base spokesman Charles Henderson.

“How it got on them and how it ignited is still a matter under investigation,” he said.

The Naval Investigative Service is conducting the probe.

The couple’s daughter, about 7 months old, was not injured, officials said. She is in the custody of Albany’s Child Protective Service.
