World IN BRIEF : MIDEAST : U.S. Sub Ventures Into the Persian Gulf
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The U.S. submarine Topeka sailed into the Persian Gulf, perhaps the first deployment of such a vessel in a body of water that had been thought to be too shallow for effective use of submarines. The trip may have been spurred by Iran’s purchase of two submarines from Russia. One of these is reportedly en route to the Gulf. The deployment of the Topeka and Iran’s purchase could spur a regional race to acquire submarines. The oil-rich gulf states are among the biggest spenders on arms.
