TURKEYS: Approved spending $500 to help support the Newton Clergy Council’s program to distribute turkeys to needy families.

LITTLE TOKYO: Approved a $101,701 contract with E. C. Construction Co. to make improvements to Little Tokyo Plaza, including renovating curbs, gutters and sidewalks.

CRIME PREVENTION: Approved the temporary closure of Yale Street between Alpine and College streets in Chinatown Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the Public Safety Crime Prevention Fair. The event at Castelar Elementary School is sponsored by the Chinatown Public Safety Assn.

CENTRAL LIBRARY RENOVATION: Approved spending an additional $800,000 for architectural design and construction-administration services for the Central Library renovation and expansion project. The cost of the renovation effort now exceeds $200 million.

MARIACHI FESTIVAL: Councilman Richard Alatorre has asked that street cleaning and traffic control be provided for the Festival de los Mariachis de Los Angeles scheduled for Nov. 22 in Boyle Heights. He also asked that East 1st Street between Pleasant and Boyle avenues be closed from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the festival.

STAGECOACH AND HORSES: Alatorre has requested a temporary closure of Spring Street between Temple and 4th streets from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Nov. 16 to allow a stagecoach and horses to be driven from City Hall as part of the celebration for the opening of the new Wells Fargo Bank Broadway/Spring Center branch opening.

POLICE OVERTIME: Approved transferring $4.5 million from a special fund to the Police Department to help pay for police overtime accrued during the civil disturbances. Passed: 12-0. Voting yes: Alatorre, Mike Hernandez, Joan Milke Flores, Mark Ridley-Thomas and Rita Walters.

WRONGFUL DEATH SETTLEMENT: Approved spending $495,000 to settle the wrongful death lawsuit brought by the parents of Leon Panduro, 18, who was shot and killed by a Los Angeles police officer in March, 1990, near the Glassell Park area. Panduro allegedly tried to take the officer’s weapon while she and another officer were responding to a loud-party call. Passed: 12-0. Voting yes: Alatorre, Hernandez, Milke Flores, Ridley-Thomas and Walters.
