Iran said Saturday it has no intention of working toward a resumption of diplomatic relations with the United States despite Bill Clinton’s presidential election victory.

Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati told the Iranian news agency IRNA that there has been no major difference in the policies of past U.S. administrations.

Former President Jimmy Carter, a Democrat, cut diplomatic relations with Iran in 1979 after students took over the U.S. Embassy in Tehran following the 1979 Islamic revolution.
