Watts Towers

Share

After my 30-year involvement with the Watts Towers, it was a pleasure to read about them (Nov. 2) as “A Towering Symbol of Hope in Watts,” thanks to Miles Corwin. In other less positive newspaper and magazine articles before 1986, they were an example of a “Towering Dream,” “Toppling Towers” or worse.

We all want the CRA-funded master plan to be followed soon with a masterful development of the hoped for Cultural Crescent between 103rd and 107th Streets in Watts. And why not? Since 1986, the city has performed miracles at the towers in an effort spearheaded by 15th District Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores, her deputy Mike Stewart, Rodney Punt of the Cultural Affairs Department and other representatives of the city. Because of your editing of my interview, it may have seemed that I was critical of the management of the towers by the city and I was, before 1985. But not now. My thanks to these people and others who have helped and will help preserve the towers.
