Carin Pugh ended 88 minutes and 35 seconds of futility when she scored to give UC San Diego a 1-0 victory over Minnesota’s Macalester College in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III women’s soccer regional tournament at Triton Stadium. Pugh’s goal with 1:25 remaining in regulation sent No. 12 UCSD into today’s noon final in La Jolla against No. 3 Cal Lutheran.

Pugh took a crossing pass from Joanne daLuz, a senior forward out of University of San Diego High, settled the ball, then hammered it in from 20 yards for the score. Mel Hoialmen, goalie for the No. 11 Scots (16-3), had stopped 11 shots on goal to that point. The UCSD defense allowed two shots on goal. Pugh, a freshman midfielder from Woodside, leads the Tritons (11-2-3) in goals with 10.

Cal Lutheran (17-3) defeated Trinity, 3-0, in the other semifinal. Today’s game will be a rematch of last year’s regional final, won by the Tritons, 2-0. The two also played Oct. 9, with Cal Lutheran winning, 2-0.
