LONDON : Test of Anglican Unity
The General Synod of the Church of England will hold a critical vote Wednesday on a contentious motion to admit women to the priesthood.
About 1,300 women deacons have indicated they would like to be consecrated as full-fledged priests of the Anglican communion. However, about 1,000 priests--including three bishops--have warned they might resign if the church decides to ordain women.
The vote is expected to be close. The Anglican leader, Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey, has indicated he is in favor of the motion--although he sees his chief role as maintaining Anglican unity.
