Reasons for Bush’s Loss
We Republicans will be arguing about what caused the Bush loss for a long time. I, a (mostly) moderate Republican, think the largest factor, after the economy, was the dictatorial social agenda of some parts of the GOP. I became and stayed a Republican because I believe that it is not a good, or efficient, idea for government to try to run people’s lives. So imagine my response to some Republicans’ attempt to put Big Brother in charge of my reproductive behavior (to mention only one problem).
Since there is no such thing as “party discipline” in this country, parties must persuade and lead, not dictate. When they try to dictate what the members must believe, members often respond: “(deleted) you, I’m voting for the other guy.” The response of non-members will be less polite.
We saw a lot of that in this election. When Republican leaders realize that they have no whip to crack over the membership or electorate, but must use ideas and persuasion, the recovery will begin.
