TOKYO — A man is in critical condition in a hospital after dousing himself with gasoline and setting himself ablaze in front of Japan’s Imperial Palace on Tuesday.
Police said the 57-year-old man, from Kyoto, carried four letters addressed to his family and employers. They declined to reveal the contents.
The Kyodo news agency said the letters praised Emperor Akihito and lamented the bribery scandals that have rocked Japanese politics recently.
