Baby Boomers Step Up to Govern

Share

I must have heard the same thing from a dozen friends: “I was so immersed in the election this year.” Not coincidentally, the majority of them punched the Clinton/Gore ticket. Much has been written about their post-World War II birthdays and 1960s sensibilities. Perhaps more from Bill Clinton than from any recent President, we demand--and expect--forthrightness, integrity and the absence of anything ending in “gate.”

The new Administration will suffer the inevitable failures and disappointments because the enormous diversity of issues and problems facing our country is truly mind-numbing. But the pressure is really on us, the baby boomers who consider Clinton our peer and, statistically speaking, supported him the most. We believe we finally got the man of focus and fervor that we wanted, but we are the ones who will be executing the plans. It’s time for this generation to step up and meet the challenge of non-rhetorical, non-divisive, functional government in the 1990s.
