SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA : Film Industry Safety Under Review After Fire Mishaps

Share

California’s top fire official has begun a massive entertainment industry education campaign because of a rash of recent accidents on movie location sites.

“There have been six major accidents in Southern California since June that involved fires, severe injuries and emergency response,” state Fire Marshal Ronny Coleman told the California Film Commission this week.

Twelve people have been treated for second- and third-degree burns that involved special effects and stunts, Coleman said. Those burned included eight stunt workers, two pyrotechnicians and an assistant director.

“When you do things like this they are not accidents,” Coleman told the commission. “They are miscalculations or things that are an unexpected reaction to a special effect.

In response, the Hollywood Reporter said a series of industry workshops had been scheduled.
