Nation IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Policeman’s Retrial Back in Tallahassee

The trial of a Miami policeman whose slaying of a black motorcyclist touched off riots in 1989 was sent back to Tallahassee. William Lozano’s first conviction in Miami was overturned on grounds the jury may have feared further violence. The retrial was sent to Orlando. But because of the Los Angeles riots, the case was sent to Tallahassee to get more blacks on the jury. Later, the case was sent back to Orlando after Tallahassee civic leaders complained of the potential for violence. Florida’s high court said one circuit judge did not have the authority to override another’s order.
