WILD TIMES: Lou Reed has rewritten “Walk on the Wild Side” in support of the film “Damned in the U.S.A.,” a documentary on U.S. censorship battles that was itself the target of an unsuccessful suit by the Rev. Donald Wildmon to ban its release. The title of the updated song: “Walk on the Wildmon.” A clip of Reed performing the song has been included in a new prologue segment to the film shot by director Paul Yule.
The song caustically describes Wildmon’s court failures:
Righteous Donald bought the best lawyers money could buy
At the deposition he looked them in the eye
A little lie here, a little lie there
He thought Mississippi was the place where
He could, hey, take a walk on the wild side. . .
The fundamentalists went: sue sue sue, sue sue, sue sue sue sue .
Reed says he has no plans to release the record.
