The Milagros AIDS Project of El Centro Human Services celebrated the grand opening of its new location at 1001 S. Goodrich Blvd. last week.

The project received 10 federal grants totalling $800,000 to buy the building and renovate it to make room for the 17-member staff, said project director Henry Alonzo. Since 1988, Milagros, the first AIDS program in East Los Angeles targeted to Latinos, has operated at El Centro’s offices across the street.

The program includes home care; an adolescent program; street outreach; the Mujeres Project for women; a food bank; support groups for men, women and families; legal services, and help in obtaining public benefits.

The program is also joining up with the Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center and the Homeless Outreach Program to start a mobile center to test people in Downtown, South-Central and the Eastside for tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS.

The new site doubles the office space to 5,000 square feet. The program currently serves 350 people, Alonzo said.
