AAA Continues Alert on Florida Highway

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The American Automobile Assn. won’t lift a warning about a stretch of interstate that was besieged by snipers, despite six arrests.
The AAA issued a travel advisory earlier this month urging motorists to stay away from the portion of Interstate 295 that partially rings the city. At least 38 shooting and rock-throwing attacks have been confirmed on the bypass since mid-February.
The Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce urged the AAA to drop the warning, demanding in a letter Wednesday that it give city officials an explanation of safety criteria if the warning remains.
The Florida National Guard was sent in 10 days ago and there have been no reports of violence since. Police have arrested six teen-agers, two of them accused of a highway shooting.
Tom Schroder, a AAA spokesman, said motorists’ safety comes first.
