Roof Fire Routs Home’s 7 Inhabitants
Seven people were routed from their home early Saturday but escaped injury when a fire engulfed the roof, authorities said.
The blaze, which originated in the fireplace, caused an estimated $150,000 in damage to the home at 967 N. West St. The home is owned by the Byzantine Catholic Church and it was not immediately known if the fireplace was equipped with fire arresters.
The family was evacuated by neighbor Father George Vida before firefighters arrived. The Red Cross was providing shelter for the four children and three adults Saturday night.
The fire started just before 1 a.m. and was extinguished in 15 minutes by 29 firefighters. Authorities said the large number of firefighters were called because of strong winds.
