Cyclone in Bangladesh Veers; 1 Killed
Cyclone-driven rain and winds of up to 110 m.p.h. battered an isolated island Saturday, killing at least one person and leveling hundreds of homes.
The cyclone had been expected to follow a different path but veered toward the island of 4,500 residents, mostly fishermen.
An old woman was killed and six people were injured on St. Martin’s Island, the only part of Bangladesh to experience the full force of the cyclone. The woman was killed when she was hit by a falling branch, an official said.
Rescue workers on Friday evacuated more than 600,000 people from Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong, coastal towns pummeled by a devastating cyclone that killed an estimated 130,000 people in 1991.
There were no other reports of casualties or damage from other areas along the 250-mile coast.
