L.A. Cityscape in Warehouse Area

Share

Yes, the warehouse district is a place of many tragedies, as described by David Ferrell in “Life in the Underbelly of L.A.” (Nov. 9).

But I would not describe the current artist population in quite as dispirited terms as he. I am part of an on-going wave of artists who continue to arrive and settle in lofts here. We visit each other often, and trade energy and inspiration. Underground galleries on Bay Street and Factory Place provide bursts of culture. Several galleries continue to present scheduled exhibitions and performances. An organization called the Los Angeles River Artists and Businessmen’s Assn. is forming.

The cityscape here is intricate and fascinating. The tragic fate of the people surrounding us would not disappear if we moved to where we didn’t see them. These people may prey on property, but they leave our persons unmolested, for which I am thankful.

I ponder the immensity of the situation. The grand vision required to create jobs and homes for America’s (and the world’s) people is beyond my ability to conjure. But it’s a valid dream.
