DEAR DIARY

Reeves presents what I consider a distorted recollection of our conversation last May 4, starting with my allegedly saying that my husband Lu and I “knew nothing” of the “Dear Neighbors” letter attacking his wife. Knowing something was the reason I called.

I had just learned that our signatures, which to save time we had sent to Tom Hayden’s headquarters on a blank sheet of paper, were displayed on a letter we had assumed would be a routine endorsement of Hayden’s qualifications, not O’Neill’s purported lack of same.

As for “publicly quitting the Hayden campaign,” this suggests that we would no longer support Hayden, which we do. What I did pledge was that we would not sign our names to anything we hadn’t bothered to read.
