PLAY THINGS : Rubber-a-Go-Go
7 p.m. The call comes in. They’ll pick up the stuff in the lot behind Tower Records.
8:25 p.m. Tony Maza parks at Tower and waits.
8:30 p.m. A truck pulls in. Four young men get out; Maza goes to meet them.
8:38 p.m. Done deal. Maza returns with a fistful of singles. The boys leave with the stuff--four Kimono condoms.
“They’re young kids. They don’t like going to the store,” says Maza, 45. Typical operation for Maza, owner and operator of North Hollywood-based Cupid Condom Delivery Service.
“On a good week, I’ll get between 65 and 80 deliveries,” he says. He delivers everything from a few condoms to a 1,000-condom case--prices start at $5.99 for six--to residents within a 15- to 20-mile radius of North Hollywood. A lot are women, many of them moms who buy them for their kids. People rarely call in the crunch. It’s more of a discretion thing. One woman did answer the door in a see-through gown. Invited him inside, too.
8:50 p.m. Maza is interrupted by his car phone. “How may I help you?” It’s a split order--half a dozen Kimonos, half a dozen Trojans. Rendezvous with a black Mercedes at 9:45. Mulholland and Beverly Glen.
“He sounds serious,” Maza says. He’s still smarting over the case of Kiss-of-Mint condoms he brought to Sunset Boulevard at 11 a.m. The customer never showed.
9 p.m. Double order of Kimonos. ASAP. A lady in Burbank. Whipping out a Thomas Guide, Maza drives while looking up the address.
9:30 p.m. Back in the car with a $2 tip. He’ll have to hurry to make it to Mulholland by 9:45.
9:50 p.m. The black Mercedes is waiting. Maza gets a $5 tip.
10:05 p.m. Homeward bound.
And what about the lady in the see-through dress?
“Come on,” Maza says. “Even condom deliverers don’t mix business and pleasure.”
