‘Home 2’ Alone at the Top

The national box-office gross zoomed into high speed over the weekend, giving the film industry renewed hope for a strong 1992 finale. With final figures reported on Monday, “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” came in with a dazzling $31.5 million in ticket sales in its opening weekend.

In its second weekend, “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” dropped sharply off the torrid pace it had established in the first week--but half of $30 million is still a bonanza and was good enough for second place.

“Malcolm X” scored a strong $9.8 million over the weekend and $13.6 million since its opening Wednesday. From an exhibitor’s standpoint, its lengthy running time and its serious political subject matter hampers the potential gross. But comparisons are being made to last year’s “JFK.”
