Great Western Financial Corp.

Business: Savings & Loan Symbol: GWF Shares Outstanding: 33.7 million.

Market: NYSE Closing Price on 11/20/92: $14.125 Great Western Financial Corp. is a Chatsworth-based thrift that has remained on relatively firm financial footing by sticking to making home mortgage loans while other savings and loans loaded up on junk bonds and risky commerical loans. In 1991 it was the nation’s most profitable thrift. Great Western is known from its Western-themed television commericals, first with John Wayne, now with Dennis Weaver. But even Great Western has not been immuned to the troubles of the S&L; industry, and it recently added to its provisions for future loan and real estate losses. The weak California economy also remains a worry for Great Western, since about 80% of its loans are made in the state.
