From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Authorities said the mission to pluck two Paramount Pictures employees from the mouth of Kilauea Volcano may have been the most expensive rescue ever launched on Hawaii Island. Officials said at least three helicopters will need repairs because volcanic gases got into their engines. Overhauling an engine can cost about $80,000 and replacing it about $150,000, said Perry Brown, an insurance inspector. Damage to other equipment, as well as overtime pay, will add at least another $30,000 to the bill, Hawaii County Fire Chief Daniel Ayala said. He said he would ask the county attorney if Paramount can be billed.
