Scouting Defenders Spark Lively Volley on Standards

Enough with the BSA-bashing in The Times. (The Nov. 22) headline screaming “Scouts Miss Food Drive Goal; Group Collects Over 400,000 Cans, But Was Hoping for 1 Million” was the ultimate.

Whether the headline--which had nothing to do with the leading paragraphs, supposedly the main idea of the story--was simply further evidence of your apparent commitment to tear down any shred of human decency that may be left in our society (reference “Charities Fear All to Be Hurt by Bad Publicity” in the same section) is irrelevant.

The main point was that thousands of young men, with the help of their leaders, parents, siblings, California National Guard, and yes, even some Girl Scouts, collected nearly half a million cans of food to help feed Orange County’s hungry.

The Cub Scouts in our pack, along with Scouts in other packs and troops across the county (worked hard) for two Saturdays “to do their best to do their duty to God and their county, and to help other people.” That single headline, has degraded their efforts and shattered their self-esteem.
