WINNIE’S WAY

After reading “Winnie Mandela Woos the Masses,” I was convinced that the writer is white and has no real understanding of how it feels to be a victim of racism every single day, and how oppression influences the actions that one must take to bring about positive changes.

He acknowledged some of the undeniably positive characteristics and contributions of Winnie Mandela. But he also perpetuated negative allegations that have not been proven. Considering what the South African government represents, I would not believe anything in its media.

For the writer to say that the Mandelas’ life goal has been nearly reached is absurd. True freedom and equality are a long way off in South Africa.

Scott Kraft replies: After months of research, I concluded that Winnie Mandela is an extraordinary leader--but also a woman with a dark side. That side includes court convictions (not unproven allegations) and strong criticism from respected black liberation leaders. My story also made clear that true racial equality in South Africa is a long way off, which is why Winnie Mandela remains an important force. Yet many blacks, including Nelson Mandela, believe their freedom is near, indeed.
