Technical Nests Preferred

Share

As a mid-level engineering manager and a 20-year veteran electronics engineer, I fail to share the concern for Asian underrepresentation in engineering management (“Aerospace Careers in Low Orbit,” Nov. 16).

Such positions are often no more palatable to some Asians than elective political offices around the country.

The glass ceilings are often welcomed and self-imposed due to (1) cultural upbringing; (2) less than optimum English communication skills and (3) technical job satisfaction versus the treacherous minefields of corporate politics.

If some Asians prefer their technical nests, why are you so alarmed and try to force them into management just to satisfy the statistics?

Whereas for those of us who want to try the challenges of management, the positions offer new adventures beyond your perceived glass ceiling.
