Orange County to Close Some Offices Alternate Fridays

More than 100 Orange County offices dealing with everything from health care to building permits will be closed every other Friday starting Feb. 26 under a controversial cost-cutting plan finalized Tuesday.

One of the area’s largest employers, the county government joins Riverside County and a half-dozen cities in Orange County that have implemented similar plans.

Instead of working five eight-hour days each week, about 6,000 county employees will work longer hours and get every other Friday off. “Essential” services such as law enforcement, courts and park operations will stay on their old schedules.

Board of Supervisors Chairman Roger R. Stanton was the only board member to oppose the plan, saying it will not save anywhere near the $1.1 million a year that staff members are predicting.
