A cashier at a fast-food chain’s drive-through window was shot and wounded after she refused to comply with a would-be robber’s demand to hand over the restaurant’s cash, authorities said Thursday.

Denise Baldwin, 31, was in serious condition Thursday night at Mercy Hospital, hospital spokesman Michael Scahill said.

A suspect was arrested soon after the shooting, officials said.

Baldwin was shot while working Wednesday night at Rally’s Hamburgers restaurant in the 8600 block of Jamacha Road in Spring Valley, the Sheriff’s Department said.

A masked man driving drove up to the drive-through window about 9:30 p.m., pointed a pistol at Baldwin and said it was a robbery, sheriff’s deputies said. Not believing the gun was real, Baldwin closed the window and turned away, deputies said.

The masked man drove a few feet away, then fired two shots at the window. One bullet hit Baldwin in the abdomen, deputies said.

Minutes later, deputies stopped a car three blocks away. Bryan Lamar Early, a 19-year-old Spring Valley student, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and attempted armed robbery, deputies said.
