Hong-Choo Hyun, South Korean ambassador to the United States, spoke Wednesday at the Sheraton Grande Hotel in Los Angeles. His speech was sponsored by Town Hall of California. From Hyun’s address:

On U.S.-Korea Economic Relations

“Economic relations between South Korea and the United States already offer many opportunities. . . . The Korea-California trade connection is particularly strong, given our proximity. More exports from the U.S. come to Korea via California than from any other state.

Of this state’s export markets worldwide, South Korea ranks fourth. About $4 billion worth of American goods and services move from here to my nation each year. Clearly, what is good for the Korea-U.S. trade alliance is also good for the state of California.”

On The U.S.-Korea Alliance Today

“Korea today stands as an influential diplomatic and trading power on the world stage. Our relationship with the United States is closer and more important than ever. . . . Our relationship with the United States has shifted from one of patronage to one of full partnership.

The end of the Cold War has accelerated the changes in our alliance. The national security of both our countries is less dependent on military strength and more closely linked with economic potential.”
