HE GETS AN A: One group that was happy to see Umberg unseat Pringle in 1990 was the California School Boards Assn. It honored Umberg Friday as Freshman Legislator of the Year. Umberg sponsored key education bills and usually voted right, says the association’s Laura Walker. . . . She adds: “More than that, he’s a very thoughtful legislator. He’s always open to hearing our opinions. We don’t have big bucks for lobbying, so that’s important.”
