World IN BRIEF : PAKISTAN : Melee Climaxes Rally Led by Opposition
Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto brought her “long march” to oust Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to the capital of central Punjab province, where supporters stormed the assembly building and reportedly set furniture ablaze. The former prime minister’s arrival in Lahore in a 20-vehicle convoy climaxed a three-day cavalcade through Punjab--the latest leg of the march she began last month aimed at toppling Sharif. Despite the violence, however, police actions were restrained compared with the fierce attacks on crowds in November when the first march Bhutto wanted to lead to the national Parliament in Islamabad was broken up.
