SAN CLEMENTE : $2.9-Million Repair of Streets to Begin

Share

About $2.9 million worth of street repair projects will begin here soon, one of the largest road improvement programs in city history. It relies primarily on federal grant money.

The City Council last week unanimously awarded contracts to several companies to do the work and thanked staff members for competing so well with the “big boys” of the county in winning such a large amount of grant funds. Six out of seven San Clemente road projects were approved for funding. The city will kick in about $400,000 toward the overall project.

The contract bids are subject to final approval from the California Department of Transportation.

One of the major projects involves two phases of rehabilitation work on the last stretches of El Camino Real. In the last seven years, the city has managed to redo most of the busy thoroughfare. “If you would have asked me what our chances of doing this were three years ago, I would have said none,” City Engineer William E. Cameron said.

The following streets are also among those that will be repaired:

-- Avenida Pico, from Frontera to Calle de los Molinos.

-- Avenida Victoria, from El Camino Real to Elena Lane.

-- Avenida Calafia, from Avenida del Presidente to the State Beach entrance.

-- Esplanade, from Trafalgar Lane to West Paseo de Cristobal.

During the road construction projects, the city will also make some storm drain repairs.
