SANTA CLARITA : Heidt Will Start 2nd Term as Mayor
City Councilwoman Jan Heidt will become Santa Clarita’s first second-term mayor tonight when she accepts the gavel from outgoing Mayor Jill Klajic before a council meeting at City Hall.
Heidt, 53, who campaigned for Santa Clarita’s cityhood in 1987 and helped create a citywide recycling program and an oak tree preservation ordinance, will again serve as mayor for one year as part of the city’s policy of rotating the position among the five council members.
She had been mayor in 1989, following Howard P. (Buck) McKeon, who served as the city’s first mayor in 1988 and recently was elected representative of California’s new 25th Congressional District.
