Man Accused of Setting a Fatal Apartment Fire

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A man was charged with murder Monday for setting fire to an apartment, killing two children and critically injuring two others.
Thomas Jerome (Sonny) Elder was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two unrelated counts of selling cocaine and aggravated assault.
The fire was set in a scheme to recover a “significant” amount of cocaine, said Police Chief Phil Keith. At least one of three women who had left their children at the apartment were the targets, he said.
