Foes Battle for Sarajevo’s Suburbs
Muslims and Serbs battled for outlying districts of the capital Monday, and the fighting kept the city’s airport closed to relief planes.
Sarajevo Radio said the Muslim-led Bosnian army routed Serbian gunners from two key vantage points on hills overlooking the city to the northwest at Zuc and Trebevic.
The fight for the hillside positions followed weekend battles in Muslim suburbs near the airport, which has been closed to humanitarian flights for nearly a week. The United Nations said relief flights will not resume for days.
In another blow to Sarajevo’s fragile food supply, authorities announced that the sole city bakery will not operate today for lack of fuel. Bread has been rationed in Sarajevo since early November.
