Nation IN BRIEF : VIRGINIA : Underground Blast Traps Eight Miners

An explosion rocked an underground coal mine near Norton, Va., trapping eight miners 6,000 feet below the surface. One miner crawled to safety and is in stable condition, authorities said. Relatives gathered at the mine in the heart of Appalachia to await word. Eighteen rescue squads converged on the mine and officials said the rescue effort would continue through the night.
