Acting Prime Minister Yegor T. Gaidar, the architect of Russia’s controversial economic reforms, faces a crucial test this week as the Congress of People’s Deputies votes--perhaps as early as today--on his tenure.
President Boris N. Yeltsin might yet cut a deal with centrist political forces that would bring them into a reshuffled Cabinet with Gaidar confirmed at the top--though Yeltsin has resisted such a deal until now.
It’s unlikely Gaidar could be confirmed without such a deal. If he is rejected, he might stay on as a lame duck until the next Congress, in the spring, or Yeltsin might give up and nominate someone else.
