Nation IN BRIEF : NATIONWIDE : AMA Takes Stricter Stand on Referrals

American Medical Assn. delegates, meeting in Nashville, Tenn., declared it unethical for a physician to refer patients to medical facilities in which the doctor has a financial interest, a practice known as “self-referral.” An exception would be the providing of such facilities in underserved areas where there is a need and a physician may be the only one to provide them.
