Clinton Reportedly Plans to Pick Woman as Attorney General
President-elect Bill Clinton plans to name the first woman attorney general and is considering four candidates, a newspaper reported in today’s editions.
Quoting transition aides, the New York Times said that the candidates are federal appeals Judge Patricia M. Wald, 64, of the District of Columbia Circuit; U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Amalya L. Kearse, 55, of New York; Judge Judith S. Kaye, 54, of the New York Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court; and attorney Brooksley E. Born, 52, of the Washington firm of Arnold & Porter.
The decision to focus on female candidates to head the Justice Department followed a meeting in Washington last week in which top Clinton aides, including transition chairman Vernon E. Jordan Jr., conferred with the leaders of about a half-dozen women’s rights groups, the newspaper said.
All four candidates have been interviewed by top transition officials, two of them last weekend in Little Rock, Ark., the newspaper said.
