Red Robin Gets an ATM: Taking a page from the Carl Karcher book of doing business, Red Robin International Inc., the Irvine-based operator of the Red Robin Burger & Spirit Emporium restaurant chain, has installed an automated teller machine in its Santa Ana restaurant.

Like those at Karcher’s Carl’s Jr. fast-food restaurants, the ATM--provided by a San Diego-based bank as part of a pilot program--doesn’t cough up cash. Instead, customers feed in their bank cards, punch in an amount equal to their bills and no more than $40 in additional cash and get back receipts. They hand the receipts to the server or bartender, who returns with a bill marked “paid” as well as with any extra cash that was requested.
