$278,000 Contract Awarded for Electric Bus
The Torrance City Council this week awarded a $278,000 contract to Specialty Vehicle Manufacturing Corp. of Downey for the purchase of a mid-size, electric battery-powered transit bus.
The bus, considered part of a pioneering effort to explore alternative fuel systems, will be purchased with the city’s allocation of Los Angeles County transportation funds. Although the council approved the project in October, a contract was not awarded until Tuesday.
If the bus is a success, it could pave the way for the eventual conversion of Torrance’s entire diesel-operated, 55-bus transit fleet, city officials said.
