GLENDALE : Moorhead Wins Key House Post

Share

As expected, Rep. Carlos J. Moorhead (R-Glendale) was elected Wednesday to the influential position of ranking minority member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

“I’m very pleased,” said Moorhead, an 18-year congressional veteran. “It will mean a lot of work, a lot of responsibility.”

Moorhead, who was in line for the coveted post, was challenged by Rep. Thomas J. Bliley Jr. (R-Va.), who contended he would be a stronger leader.

The GOP Committee on Committees had voted Tuesday to endorse Moorhead for the post.

No figures were released for either tally.

But Moorhead said he understood that the Committee on Committees’ tally “was very satisfactory.”

He said the victory bodes well for Southern California.

“I represent the whole Congress and the whole country in carrying out this particular function,” Moorhead said.

“But I am very interested in Southern California and think I can have a very positive affect for our area.”

This was Moorhead’s second victory this week.

On Tuesday, his 21 California Republican colleagues reelected him chairman of the state’s GOP delegation.

He was unchallenged.

The 70-year-old conservative said that he expects to serve no more than two more terms.
