COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Shorthanded Cypress Prevails on Livingston’s Shot

Share

Anthony Livingston scored Cypress’ last six points, including a driving one-handed shot with six seconds left, to give the Chargers a 61-60 victory over Mt. San Antonio in the first round of the Riverside Holiday tournament.

The Chargers had five players at the start of the 1 p.m. game because of finals and the flu, but players kept trickling in and the team had 10 before the half was over.

Cypress was also without Coach Don Johnson, who is out with the flu. Assistant Jack Long guided the team.

“The flu and injuries have just ripped through us,” Long said. “Brett Evans went to the doctor today for an X-ray to see if his foot was broken and he ended up starting. That’s just how things have been so far.”

Cypress (8-2) rallied for seven consecutive points to tie the score, 47-47. Robbie Shelton, a sophomore forward, tied it with a three-pointer with 7:42 left. Shelton had a game-high 25 points.

Cypress used a four-point play by Livingston with 1:18 left to take a 59-58 lead. His three-point try from the top of the key was short, but he got his own rebound, went back behind the line, made it and was fouled.

Mt. San Antonio took the lead for the last time when William English got his own rebound and made a layup with 43 seconds left to give the Mounties a 60-59 lead.
