Sen. Bob Packwood

While it is indeed laudable that Packwood has decided to deal with his substance abuse problem, it is erroneous to assume an automatic connection between alcoholism and abuse to women, sexual or otherwise. It is true that alcohol may reduce inhibitions to antisocial behavior. However, the core belief system that permits the behavior is always present prior to the consumption of any substance.
In my 12-plus years of working with the staggering problem of family violence, it has become clear that if we are able to “sober up” the perpetrator, the end product is a “sober” abuser.
I would encourage the senator to contact a women’s center in his area where he could begin to address his misogynist attitudes. Perhaps then he would be in a position to be of genuine service to a population he purports to champion; namely, women.
