‘Howards’ Tops Board of Review Awards

“Howards End” dominated the annual D.W. Griffith Awards of the National Board of Review, a group of academics, filmmakers, editors and critics.

The board selected “Howards End” as best picture of the year and named its director, James Ivory, as best director and star Emma Thompson as best actress.

In announcing its awards Wednesday in New York, the Board of Review picked Jack Lemmon as best actor in “Glengarry Glen Ross,” Jack Nicholson as supporting actor in “A Few Good Men” and Judy Davis as supporting actress in “Husbands and Wives.”

“Indochine” was voted best foreign-language film. “Donner Party” was named top TV movie.

Special awards were given to Ted Turner for film preservation efforts, Robin Williams for his Genie voice in Walt Disney Pictures’ “Aladdin,” Beatrice Welles for work in bringing her father Orson Welles’ “Othello” back to theaters and Jaye Davidson, whose role in “The Crying Game” won the most auspicious debut citation.

The group’s career achievement award will go to Shirley Temple.

The awards will be presented Feb. 22.
