Parts of New Jersey were designated federal disaster areas Friday because of last weekend’s brutal storm. Officials estimated that it caused at least $750 million in damage in the state.

And President Bush on Thursday declared Connecticut’s Middlesex, New Haven and Fairfield counties disaster areas. New York also has requested federal disaster relief but has not received a response, a spokesman for Gov. Mario M. Cuomo said.

The storm carried hurricane-force winds and sat over a large area of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states for two days.

A disaster declaration opens the way for federal cleanup and repair grants and low-interest loans, as well as housing, unemployment insurance and legal aid.

New Jersey counties listed as disaster areas were Atlantic, Monmouth, Ocean, Bergen, Cumberland and Cape May. Federal Emergency Management Agency officials said more counties could be added to the list.
