LIBRARIES FOR THE SIGHTLESS

“King of the Stacks” (by Bill Thomas, Nov. 15), profiling the nation’s head librarian, James Billington, offered a good look at the scope of the Library of Congress.
Unfortunately, no mention was made of the National Library Service, a major part of the Library of Congress, which employs the services of a national network of 56 regional libraries. This important program provides people who are blind or physically disabled with talking books and Braille materials. The Braille Institute maintains one of our nation’s largest libraries, serving the 10 counties of Southern California and all of Arizona.
