BURBANK : Airport Income Drops Despite Record Use
More passengers than ever used Burbank Airport in fiscal 1991-92, yet the airport’s net income dropped sharply and the number of commercial jet flights decreased about 16%.
Passenger volume reached 3.78 million during the fiscal year that ended June 30--the second consecutive record-setting year and a 1.4% increase from the previous year, according to a report released Monday.
The number of commercial jet flights dropped from nearly 60,000 in fiscal 1990-91 to about 50,000. An airport spokeswoman said larger modern jets accommodate more passengers, so that a smaller number of planes can carry a larger number of people. But the airport’s net income dropped by 18% to about $3 million because of higher overhead, including the soundproofing of a nearby school.
