Countywide : Collection Days Set for Hazardous Waste

Share

Ventura Regional Sanitation District board members have approved a schedule of household hazardous waste collection days to be conducted twice each year in west and central Ventura County through 1997.

The collections allow residents to dispose of hazardous products that cannot be placed in most landfills, including paint, motor oil, antifreeze, car batteries, pesticides, poisons, oven and drain cleaners.

The district spends about $130,000 on each collection to hire a special team to identify, sort, pack and transport the hazardous waste materials to a landfill that accepts hazardous waste, said district spokeswoman Kitty Dill.

The collection days are planned every two years in the larger communities of Ventura, Camarillo and Oxnard/Port Hueneme. Collections are planned every four years in the smaller cities of Santa Paula, Fillmore and Ojai. Each collection day, however, is open to residents of all cities. j

The schedule calls for collection days in Ventura in September, 1993 and 1995; in Camarillo in the spring of 1994 and 1996; in Santa Paula-Fillmore in September, 1994; in Ojai in September, 1996, and in Oxnard/Port Hueneme in the spring of 1995 and 1997.

Exact dates and locations will be announced before each collection day.

The Ventura Regional Sanitation District manages waste water treatment centers and landfills serving eight cities in Ventura County. Thousand Oaks is affiliated with the district but conducts its own hazardous waste roundups.
