Regional Rates for Welfare Cuts Rejected by U.S.

Welfare recipients in high-cost urban areas will have to endure the same 5.8% cut in their benefits as recipients in lower-cost areas, despite the desire of the Legislature to impose a regional rate structure.

The federal government has notified Wilson Administration officials that the state’s request for a four-tiered rate structure for Supplementary Security Income and State Supplementary Payment programs is not acceptable.

State officials said the decision in effect blocks similarly proposed regional rates for the much larger Aid to Families With Dependent Children program because language in budget bills earlier this year sought regional rates for all--not just some--welfare programs.
